Why are obsessed with plastic bags?

Posted on Updated on

Here is a simple exercise.

After your week’s shopping, put your plastic bags to the left. Then place all of the plastic contained in that plastic bag on the right.

Yes, that includes the plastic container for milk, margarine, chicken, beef, pork, hummus, cooking oil, coffee; plastic wrapping for that pack of four apples; the plastic container for that apple juice; the plastic in that CD (if you are still one of these curious people who buys CDs); the plastic your shampoo, shower gel, hand wash and kitchen cleaner come in. I could go on…..

After you have done this, ask yourself this question: Why are we so obsessed with plastic bags?

…Because so many of them end up blowing about?

Whereas other types of packaging tend to be discarded in a situation where they end up in a bin.

Ideally materials would be used for packaging which would make them easily biodegradable. Or, if not, there would be a returnable surcharge attached, like there used to be when I was a kid.

The Climate Change Act (2008) required that supermarkets charge for plastic bags (really). They don’t of course.
